Trailblazers Among the Stars | First Women in Space

The journey of women into space began with two pioneering figures—one in Soviet Union, and in United States—who defied all expectations. A closer look at the astrological charts of Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, and Sally Ride, and their respective times of takeoff into Earth's orbit, reveal striking synchronicities that hint at bigger cosmic forces and archetypes.

Sally Ride

Sally was born May 26, 1951, under the Gemini Sun, Sally Ride’s chart exudes intellectual curiosity and adaptability. It is no wonder she was a professor of physics for most of her life. But it was her Sun conjunct Mars in Gemini that signals courage, and a willingness to take risks. However, there is one aspect that makes her stand out and in turn activate all of those strengths in an unconventional way - Uranus on the Ascendant.  This placement clearly tells us she was destined to take an unpredictable path. Nobody in her childhood could have foreseen her journey to space, but the stars certainly did.

Her Pluto opposite Moon reflects a deep sense of inner strength and emotional resilience, while Saturn as a singleton indicates unwavering determination. People often dismiss singletons in their charts, they don't get much attention, but I find them incredibly insightful. Everything in her life had to be highly ordered, including the distinction between her private and public lives. This is further supported by the fact her chart ruler, the Moon, is in the 8th house associated with secrecy. Sally kept her personal life intensely private, including her 27-year relationship with Tam O’Shaughnessy, which was only revealed after her passing.

Valentina Tereshkova

Valentina Tereshkova, born March 6, 1937, under the sign of Pisces, embodies the spirit of a voyager—both literally and metaphorically. We lack her exact birth time, but even without the knowledge of her ascendant, it is clear she is a trailblazer.

Her Venus in Aries and Mars in Scorpio are both indicative of a fighter's spirit, someone who isn't afraid of an uncharted territory. Maybe she would be preoccupied by some other unknowns and challenges in her life if not for the Moon in Sagittarius that makes her incredibly curious for anything that is far away.

A key feature in her chart is Sun conjunct Saturn—a hallmark of discipline and perseverance, a lighter version (and more controllable) of Sally's Saturn singleton. This aspect often manifests in individuals who endure extreme hardship but have the capacity to achieve greatness. Valentina came from a working class background, and because of her life for skydiving and extraordinary parachuting skills she was hand-picked by the Soviet government to be the first woman in space. **Saturn aspects** are often related to being an important figure for the collective.

Her Mercury at the 29th degree, known as an anaretic degree, indicates a mind operating at peak intensity. This is an unpredictable degree, we never know how it will manifest, and in her case, it came down to operating a spacecraft.

Neptune opposing her Sun adds an element of mysticism and vision to her life. She doesn't see the world as other people do, but always filters every decision through the dream she harbors. She had extraordinary ability to turn the impossible into reality.

And let’s not forget Valentina’s Cosmic Birthday Candle reading—born on March 6, her birthday carries the theme of "Inspiring Voyagers.” How fitting is that? The description speaks of souls who voyage through life with awe, exploring realms where things can be sensed but not always known. It’s as if the universe itself designed her for this mission. Astrology of their Departures

Beyond the individual charts, we must check out how the sky looked like at the time the flights took place. And we see the 12th house theme emphasized again and again. a house of transcendence, sacrifice, and universal connection. In pivotal moments of women’s history, we often see this Piscean/Neptune/12th house influence, reminding us that these achievements are not just personal milestones but collective victories for humanity.

Another recurring theme is Mars activation—both women had natal Mars placements that aligned with Mars at the time of their flights, reinforcing the idea that when Mars is in your sign, you are emboldened to tackle daring feats. Sally's Mars in Gemini was activated by Mars in Gemini at the time of the lunch, and Valentina's Mars in Scorpio was activated by Mars in Scorpio at the time of her lunch.

Additionally, both flights featured Uranus trine Venus, a planetary alignment that symbolizes an unexpected yet groundbreaking leap forward for women. Uranus literally means "unexpected" and Venus stands for women—illustrating that these missions were part of a larger cosmic shift for women’s roles in society.

Final Thoughts: Answering the Call to the Unknown

What’s remarkable is that neither of these women had obvious “astronaut” markers in their charts. What they did have were placements that gifted them courage, determination, and an openness to the unknown. Many of you reading this may have similar signatures in your own charts. The message here is simple—**if you feel the call for greatness, answer it.
